six writers who shaped Carmel:
Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Mary Austin,
George Sterling, Robinson Jeffers, Sinclair Lewis
Carmel, Calif. - 20 January, 2025 - The Carmel Public Library Foundation released a new video of literary detective Vince Emery presenting Literary Luminaries: Six Trailblazing Writers Who Shaped Carmel on Vimeo. The video shows Emery's recent presentation to a full house in Carmel's Harrison Memorial Library, the latest event in the Carmel Public Library Foundation's Henry Meade Williams Local History Lecture Series. Emery reveals surprises about Carmel and the lives and works of Jack London, Upton Sinclair, Mary Austin, Robinson Jeffers, George Sterling, and Sinclair Lewis. As writers, they found artistic refuge and inspiration in Carmel and they, in turn, revealed its unique charm to the world. How did the lives of these writers—who made national or even international reputations—intertwine and contribute to the life and spirit of Carmel?
Vince Emery explores the dramatic creation of literary Carmel using the six writers' own words plus works of art, never-before-seen manuscripts, photos, and other rarities from the Henry Meade Williams Local History Center to illustrate the surprising stories of these authors. The presentation concludes with the unveiling of famous sculptor Haig Patigian's bronze death mask of poet and playwright George Sterling, cast the day of Sterling's 1926 suicide and never before shown in public.
